Life’s Extras · Jewelry & valuables

Jewelry & valuables, explained.

The ring, the watch, the things a home policy may not fully cover.

What it covers

A home or renters policy covers your belongings as a group, but most put a ceiling on certain categories: jewelry, watches, furs, fine art, collectibles. If one item is worth more than that ceiling, it can be scheduled, which means listed on the policy at an agreed value, or in some cases the ceiling itself can be raised.

  • Scheduled items

Each listed piece is insured for the value you and the insurer agree on, usually from a recent appraisal or receipt.

  • More ways to lose it

Scheduled coverage typically includes mysterious disappearance, meaning the ring that slipped off somewhere, not only theft or fire.

  • Deductibles

Scheduled items are often handled differently from the rest of your belongings when it comes to the deductible. How yours would work depends on the policy wording, and Elona will show you before you decide.

  • Away from home

Coverage usually travels with the item, which matters for a watch you wear every day or a ring on vacation.

One good first question

“What is the most valuable single thing I own, and do I have a recent appraisal or receipt for it?”

Bring this one to Elona and the rest of the conversation gets easier.

What Elona looks at

  • A current appraisal or receipt for each piece, plus a clear photo. Older appraisals may need refreshing as values change.
  • Whether to schedule items individually or raise the blanket ceiling for the category, which suits many smaller pieces.
  • How the agreed value is set and when it should be reviewed.
  • Whether your existing home or renters policy can carry the addition, or a standalone valuables policy fits better.
